Gardening today

I've spent nearly five hours gardening today. I ache all over - but in a nice way. I emptied the compost bin left by the previous owners - who only seemed to put grass in, not the nicest smell! Cleared more ivy - which is my main concern at the moment. Potted things up. Hung up some of my hangers. Set up my new compost bin. Dug things over, with the help of the chickens. Set up a new area for the chicken hutch. Move some stones. General clearing and sorting. It's the longest I've been able to devote to it in a while and it was lovely. Still so much more to do and I can't wait image

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • And it is so nice to have somewhere to say it. When I say at work that I worked in the garden they look at me as if I am mental!
  • Sounds like a satisfying day Minosimage

Edit: yes, I get that look tooimage

    Wearside, England.
  • Wow I thought I did well and all I did was pick up a decapitated rat dropped by a bird and purchase and relocate 6 bags of manure (perhaps a bit late but better late ...) to the end of the garden but to be fair my youngest actually did the move with the help of a handy wheelbarrow thingy that I also picked up.

  • I've got a colleague who has horses and I enquired about manure and she said she has four horses and more shit than she can handle! I've got really thick clay soil (considering making pots out of the stuff) so that should improve the soil. Only problem is getting it to the house, as I have a small car. I can see lots of journeys ahead of me. In the meantime she is going to start bagging it up for me in old feed bags image
  • Oh and my six year old is desperate for me to get a wheelbarrow! Really wouldn't be worth it for the size of our garden.

Minosgardener ... Know exactly what you mean about strange looks at work ....but now I do all my garden chatting on here, so everybody's happyimage.  Is yours a new garden for you?  Tell us moreimageimage

  • We moved last year and I started to look at the garden in October. It was actually distressing me how bland it was - grass, weed control matting and stones everywhere. Oh and the ivy EVERYWHERE! Although I imagine when they first got it, it wasn't. I came on here and was reassured actually it was just giving me time to plan. And plan I have I've got lots of things in mind to do, my priority was setting up the compost bin and getting rid of the ivy. I hate taking green material to the tip but have done two runs of ivy already and can see me doing at least three more I tried bagging it up with the intention of getting it shredded but ran out of space for storing it. The council do a green waste collection but they only let you join in April, so I have paid up, not realising nothing was going to happen for months, ach never mind. I am experimenting with lots of vertical gardening to maximise space and keep things out of reach of the chickens I am also digging a pond and planning a living willow fence. So much to do, need more light so I can do things on an evening as well I am enjoying it so much and yesterday whilst stopping to have a drink was so pleased to see birds venturing into the garden, although the chickens were already having a lively time going over where I had already dug sorry that became an essay! Short answer was yes!
  • Ach I edited my post for spelling and lost all my smilies image
  • I say wheelbarrow its a Keter green plastic one so not really a traditional one although it was  reduced to £19 in Homebase and can cope with 50 litres of compost and is narrow enough to get through a normal door as well as being light its perfect for what I need.

Love that you have chickens, I have to resist getting some, nearly got three on Saturday... must resist! Do you find them easy to keep, I worry about foxes who are always roaming around here and would make a special visit if I got them I'm sure!
