What does this mean???

ive just read that this is a job for this week but I don't understand what it means??

Prune back shoots on mophead and lacecap hydrangeas to a pair of buds.

Do I have to take off the how head of my hydrangea?

  • Yes, cut off the old flower head back to a pair of buds- or more if it was too big last year.

  • Thanks, I didn't think you did anything to them so I left them last year.  maybe  that's why they didn't grow??!!!

  • can I move them now or is it best to wait until it's warmer?

  • No, move now whilst not quite in active growth. Add bonemeal and water in well.

  • I don't cut mine back till mid/end March or till after the last frosts.

Same here SGL,  I did them early when I first moved here, keen, as new gardeners are, but then we had a frost in March/April time and those top exposed buds went black, had to prune again, I dont rush anything now.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • I always prune my hydrangeas when the last chance of frost has gone. Last year was April. The old heads protect the new buds.

  • Well we had snow this morning where I live, which is East Cheshire. I suspect Verdun must be much further south. Unless you are actually from Verdun in France!
