strawberry bare roots

So I have planted some strawberry bare roots in a couple of pots and a flower pouch - The weather appears quite mild at the moment so was thinking of just leaving them in the greenhouse? Unsure if it may be still too cold so should i leave in the conservatory for now where its a little warmer or will the greenhouse be fine? I have no heat in greenhouse at the mo

  • Strawberries are completely hardy so can go outside.  However, growing them under glass at this time of year will give you a slightly earlier crop.

  • Cheers, thanks Bob.

I must admit not sure about the flower pouch for strawberrys - have you used one before? Not sure if there will be enough room for the roots and the plants when they grwo?

  • I've not used flower pouches for strawberries, but have grown them in hanging baskets.  The main hassle is keeping them watered - they are thirsty plants.  The upside is that the fruit is kept away from slugs and the ground, so you will lose less to pests and rotting. image

  • I'm doing a lot of vertical gardening this year and so far have 12 baskets with strawberries in. Hope to do four more, but ran out of time with them yesterday image

I have wild strawberry plants scattered around my  patch.  Would they do in hanging baskets?  They certainly seem to grow and fruit in the most unsuitable places so hanging baskets ought to mean I get to eat the produce rather than the slugs etc

  • If they are anything like the wild strawberries growing here DorsetUK, they will be happy.  I have to treat them as weeds or they just take over areas.  As you say, they seem to grow in anything!

I always look out for them when I'm walking the dog as well.  Hit a good patch and the dog has to wait a whileimage.  And yes they just send out runners here in all directions but at ground level I have to be very alert to get them. I think I'll give 'em a go.
