Can you compost ferns?
I have a bunch of old dried up fern fronds that I'm ready to cut off. Can I throw them in my compost bin? I don't want any more ferns, as they seem to be coming up everywhere...but I've heard they can be beneficial for soil in compost. I don't think they are bracken ferns.

Chop them up and toss them in, even if some of the spores survive and begin to grow, they are pretty easy to weed out.
It's either ferns or firs, but one of them is good for acid loving plants. If you cut it up small and sprinkle it around the base it might do them some good. I'm sure someoneon here will know.
If you do not want any more ferns growing in your garden do not put the dead foliage anywhere near your garden, put them in a bag in your refuse . Ferns propagate from dust like spores which grow on the back of the fronds so will blow all overe the garden. If the ferns in your garden are young bracken you just have to keep digging it out and burning it or use a weedkiller if the ferns have become invasive. Bracken is a nightmare to get rid of.That is why pigs are used to clear bracken infested land.
Young bracken plants look very attractive but quickly form impenetrable basal clumps which are really difficult to dig out.
