Well done Victoria, hope you enjoy your new allotment. We have a double plot. The first half we had was started from scratch and we had to clear grass and weeds away (it had been an allotment about 50 years ago, so there was buried bits and bobs) so that's what we took time doing.
Our neighbour just faffed about really and planted a bit and then left it, didn't really clear away the weeds properly, just dug them in etc. Anyway they gave up and I took that plot on too, so again we just started at one end and dug the whole lot over again and removed everything. Replanted any useful bulbs (which are coming up now where we want them too).
SO my only advice to you is as others have said, take your time, clear it well, give it a go and most importantly enjoy
