Astilbe Chinensis 'Purpurkerze'

Afternoon All

As a newbie to gardening can anyone offer me some advice on the Purpurkerze I have in my garden?

Throughout the spring into summer it has beautiful purple candles and large volumes of green foliage and then it turns brown. I kept them as I think they look quite nice.

Now springs approaching should I cut them down, heads off etc to promote new growth.

Apologies for the ignorance!

Any help appreciated.

  • It is best to cut them down before too much new growth appears. The shoots can be fragile and it makes it harder to get at the old stems.

I leave my astilbe flower heads on too and just cut them off when there are signs of new growth.

  • Thanks all. Just to compound my display of ignorance, am i right that I just take the heads off? Not the whole stem.
