Spinach and Lettuce

I am thinking of growing the above for my chickens as they can't get enough of it. Which varieites are the largest growing? Or is there one you would particu;ar recommend over another?

I was going to say perpetual spinach, but Philippa was there first!

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Good point Edd!

Philippa do you grow anything for your chickens of just the spinach? I put a lettuce or a cabbage up for my girls from a tent peg and they love the lettuce but I think the cabbage is too much hard work for them!

  • As has been said above image, plus chickweed is good for chickens (hence it's name) and it grows very readily on tilled soil so make full use of it when you're weeding, as well as dandelions.

Also grow calendula for them, apart from the hens enjoying the greenery, they enjoy eating the petals and the colouring from them will make the yolks an even richer colour image

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • I have not seen any chickweed here! I remember lots of it from when I was a child and collecting it then for the birds, but haven't seen any for years, even at our last house.

Our chickens free range in the garden when I am there but alas whilst at work I daren't leave them to roam as they are excellent at escaping.

They have been helping me dig the pond this last few weeks image

I am growing nasturiums for them and will add calendua to my list, as well as land cress (shocker, not what I thought they'd like either but hey!)

We don't get dandelions in my garden, as the chickens eat them before I have even spotted them. I actually started to wonder if I should get some seeds and grow them specially they love them that much. Can you imagine that though? I would get some funny looks image
