Advice on hardy evergreen climbers

Hi All,

I'm about to begin a remodel of my front garden and have decided to use AFK trellis planters to create a border and I'm after advice on a what I should use to cover the trellis.  I need something which is very hardy, quick growing, evergreen, which can provide a thick coverage and withstand wind.  The location of my house within the estate means we get a lot of wind which is killing a number of my existing plants - hence the planters to help create a windbreak.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards

Neil

    Ivy!

  • Defenately ivy! You could also go for clematis armandii, it may be worth attaching something like reed screening to the back of your trellis just to encourage your plants to grow, there is also an evergreen honeysuckle which seems a bit of a bully when it gets going, afraid i cant remember its name! image

Lonicera henryi is an evergreen honeysuckle, bit of a thug, but it can be pruned.

Akebia quinata is another fast growing evergreen climber. Just remember that 'quick growing' also implies that the plant will be a rampant.grower.

  • Thanks all.  I found that one of my regular garden centres was having a major refurb sale this weekend and bought some established hardy Ivy plants to form the basis of the screen.  I've also got some clematis on order and I'm thinking about adding some Camellia into the mix.

  • Clematis armandii.
