Privet hedge die back

Hi, I planted a privet hedge last spring and it seems to be doing well in places but there is a large patch that dies back at the start of winter. I want it to grow about 4ft high to stop pedestrians looking into the living room when walking past. As a total novice I don't have a clue. Is it dead or what should I do to solve the problem.

  • Privet can lose some of its leaves in the winter and these are young plants so will be more vulnerable to the cold weather. As long as you can see buds along the twigs do not worry; they will put out new leaves and thicken up when the spring finally arrives. It is also possible that the ones in the middle are growing in slightly different conditions to the rest or they may just be clones from a different parent. As your hedge gets taller and thicker it will still  provide protection from passers-by.

  • Buttercupdays, Verdun. It seems I should just wait until the end of summer to see how it goes. I will add some fertiliser in a few weeks prior to the growing season but would prefer it to be evergreen to provide coverage during winter so if it drops leaves next winter I could swap some out.
