Conifers and Holly

Hi All

I have a well establlished 12ft conifer head which is suffering fromdie back. I have removed all the dead foliage from ground level up to approx a 2m height. The hedge is no longer performing as a barrier. The trees are approx 1m apart.

Would a holly plant survive planted in the gap between the conifers or would the conifers out compete the holly bushes for soil nutrients.

This hedge is along a boundary with other housing and i amy attempting to create another hedge without removing all plant and having it completely open for years until a new hedge grows.

Any ideas, suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar problem and was advised that the best shrub to plant under conifers is aucuba (spotted Laurel)  I have two under my conifers and I have no idea how they survive but they do and grow.

Hi from Kingswinford in the West Midlands
  • I'm open to ideas. I want to stay indigenous to the uk and be bird friendly. That's where holly came from. Also the spines offer good perimeter defence from unwanted elements if you get my meaning.
  • How much of your garden would you be prepared to sacrifice in order to plant a new hedge on your side of the existing one?
