Berberis

Hi,

About 10 years ago I planted a berberis plant in the front garden, i cant remember the  variety, but it is an evergreen, with orange/ yellow flowers in spring and loads of blue berries.

It has suddenly died, the leaves have all turned brown and it looks quite sad- could this be fire blight?

Also is it ok to remove the plant and plant something else in its place?

Thanks

Berberis won't get fireblight, wrong family.

    Rosaceae get fireblight. Berberidaceae don't.

Diseases are generally specific to one family so it might be a good idea to choose something from another family to replace it

Dig around it and cut through roots as you find them, once you can rock it things  get easier.

  • Thanks nutcutlet for the advice.

I think it may have to be another shrub, verdun, as most of the plants in the front are shrubs, mainly wild roses a couple of dogwoods and a very big guilder rose, that must be getting on for 10 foot tall, i would cut it back, but its leaves turn a deep red in autumn.
