Tomato and potato grafted- tomtato

Hi,

I have seen in a plant catalogue a plant called a tomtato, which  looks like a tomato plant grafted onto a potato plant.

Has anybody grown one and presumably the potato's cant be harvest until the autumn  once the tomato plant has finished?

Would the blight risk be higher growing a plant like this?

Thanks

  • Hi image

They grew one of these on beechgrove garden last year, i dont think they wer too impressed!

To my mind its a novelty, just something to grow for the sake of it and for fun, i cant really see much benefit.

I would share your concerns about blight, and surely it would need tons of water and feed as its trying to produce two crops?

Not for me im afraid image
  • Hi image

Thanks for your response Bekkie, I did try and grow grafted tomatoes last year, but did not have much success, they grew far too high and did not have much fruit on them  compaired with the tomato I grew from seed.

Maybe I will just stick to separate tomato and potato plants this year image

Definitely a gimmick. I have a mention of it in a book on Vegetable growing from the 1930's so it is not new.

If you want to have a go why buy one when all you need is a potato plant and and tomato plant. They are not that hard to graft together.

  • I dont grow toms anymore..cos i flippin hate them, but i heard if you lay them horizontally on the compost, they put down more roots from the stem and are more productive, is there any truth in this do you reckon?image
  • Thanks Berghill, i have deceided to have a grow separate toms and pot plants, i maY have ago at grafting them.myself, i am going to grow jazzy potatos this year as i think.they are a new varity out this year and as a novelty i have seen some Blue fleshed watermelon seeds for sale that i am gonna get and see if I have any luck with them.
  • So in theory, could you get a row of tomato plants from just one laid on its side? I wonder how productive it would be? Im almost tempted to try it, i could alway give the fruit away image
  • It is right as well that if you pinch out the side shoots of the tom plants and put them in a pot with compost, u can normally get more plants
  • I remember that Bekkie, they didn't get many potatoes or tomatoes from the plant.

  • Grew 3 plants last year. Great crop of tomatoes but only a couple of potatoes. Won't bother again.
