hawthorne and honeysuckle

I have some hard cuttings in a bucket, bit of and experiment as not done it before not used any rooting powder should i put a carrier bag over them for cover or just leave them out in a fairly shady spot? Was the end of January to late to start these? I'm really hoping the honeysuckle will take as i really like it in my garden. Any tips much appreicated.

Don't cover them, they're hardy. I've never grown hawthorn from cuttings but the honeysuckle should do OK.

This is the correct time of year to take hardwood cuttings of shrubs. If I take honeysuckle cuttings I take semi hard wood cuttings in mid summer, I haven't heard of taking cuttings of hawthorn but what have you got to lose. Just a query, are there holes in the base of the bucket? If not the compost will waterlog and the cuttings will probably rot. Good luck
  • Hawthorn can be tricky to root from cuttings (it is usually propagated from seed) but it can be done - I had a success rate of about 15% or so when I tried many years ago.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Thank you  all for the advise. I have holes in the bucket and stone mix at the bottom for easier drainage. i did dry out some berries from the hawthorne and pipped them also will be trying to see if any luck from them this year.

get the berries sown delboi.  Remember when the tree sows them. RThey need to be out there in the garden in the cold.

Have a look at this delboi.  It's about germinating trees and breaking dormancy of the seeds
