Rhododendrons

DilysDilys Posts: 8

I want to plant a line of small evergreen shrubs in a border which runs from sun to shade. An on-line plant nursery has several rhododendrons which it claims will be suitable but I only grow them in semi-shade at the moment. Has anyone tried them in full sun?

I would have used box but for the blight and anything thorny won't be suitable.

Rhododendrons like dappled shade, but this article from the RHS says that dwarf alpine ones will grow in sun if kept moist. https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=529

Could you grow a different shrub? Lonicera nitida can replace box for hedging. Or another evergreen like Choisya? Sundance and Aztec Pearl are smaller than the usual one. Or there is a small variety of Photinia Red Robin called "Little Red Robin".

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Red Robin could be nice, I didn't know there was a smaller version. I'll find out the size, my garden is very steep and  some shrubs can seem too dominant if they're very tall.

    thank you
