What flowers in February?

  • Pauline....you have some wonderful ideas there.

The French always decorate graves with pansies- the french word for pansy is "pensee" which means "thoughts".  I always take a tiny posy of pansies to place on the coffin at a funeral, and plant pansies in my garden to remember specific people.  They are not reliably perennial so if you want to keep them going you need to save a few seeds each year.

  • Sorry for your loss Pauline 7.

Sarcocca needs only a light clip to shape after flowering and a couple of feeds during the year to produce the most wonderful scent. Today I was sitting outside in a little bit of sunshine and the scent was great. What a lovely way to remember your Mum. I always think of hope when I see Snowdrops. No matter how bad the winter, up they come so delicate but so strong.

The Cornus which is flowering now with yellow tiny flowers is Cornus mas. It has red fruits later on, edible but a bit insipid.

  • In Victorian times snowdrops were often used to signify mourning - as well as being planted in churchyards, brooches with enamelled pictures of snowdrops on were worn to remember loved ones.  I think the snowdrop is a beautiful flower to use to remember someone as it appears just at the turn of the winter and fills us with hope.

My loved ones know that when I am gone they are to plant snowdrops to remember me.

I've always loved them as they flower around my birthday time.
