Buying plants on the Web

Thinking about planting new perennials soon and my local garden centres have not been very reliable in the past couple of years...Does anybody have recommendations for buying from the web please?

There is a Good Guys Thread, I'll find it and bump it up for you.

    People seem to recommend "Crocus".

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Have to say I've been using Crocus recently and the service and plants have been very good.

  • For perennials you won't do better than Woottens of Wenhaston http://www.woottensplants.com/index.html

Superb choice and great service image

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Haven't bought many potted perennials on the web, but bought bare root ones  from Peter Nyssen, (cheaper than potted, but you do some of the work) which grew really well. I started them in pots so it was easier to keep an eye on them till they were growing well, and then planted out.

I look at loads of nurseries though and would tend to trust those that are honest about their plants and tell you possible drawbacks (tends to flop, may be invasive etc) and that give clear information about flower size, hardiness and growing conditions needed. Also compare the size of pot you are getting. The better nurseries will sell in 2L or even 3L pots for large perennials, whereas others only offer 9cm pots, often for not much less.
