I'm with Edd: its quite likely to be rats. How small is small? We could be looking at rats! Moles, rabbits, mice...

Probably voles. Our garden is pickled with small holes, about an inch diameter.

Rats take the same run every night, the soil around will look smooth, their bellys almost polish it, and usually there will be a smattering of displaced soil. my OH is an expert rat trapper. He tracks the run, then either puts down bait or trap.

.If you choose to use bait, the only one that really works now and quickly is Neosorexa. They have become immune to most others.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
