Improve my soil

I need to improve my soil in one area of my garden. Nothing  grows on it. Would like to be able to grow veg. I am unable to dig so it would have to be  something  I can but on top. The rest of the gardens fine. Any ideas would be most helpful.

  • A raised bed would work.

is it actually the soil that's the problem? Has it been contaminated? Are there other factors, eg dense shade, waterlogging, bone dry , compacted?

Clearly a raised bed is a great idea as WW says, esp as you can't dig, but if there are underlying problems too, these too need to be addressed .

It does seem unusual for nothing to grow somewhere. Not even weeds? Or do you mean that ornamentals don't grow?

  • Am also suspicious that you say nothing grows. Plants need light, nutrients and water, so does the area have all of these? A raised bed might be the answer if you tell us more.

  • i have tried vegatables and herbs but they don't grow to any size. The area is sheltered and has sun more than half the day, the soil used to be quite dry. This year is going to even worse as we have had workmen around the house and they have compacted all the soil in this area. The other area in my garden grow well.
