Gardening Tool help

Hi, my name is Josh Maynard, I am an engineering undergraduate student and I am currently doing a project where the brief is to come up with a design for a innovative gardening tool.

Unfortunately, having lived in central london for my whole life, I have never had a garden.

I would love to here about the gardening chores that you hate the most, so that I can have a go at creating a tool to make things easier.

Your least favorite gardening chores/ideas for a garden tool, would be wonderful.

(I would like to point out that I am not trying to make any money out of this, I will be coming up with the design for the final part of my second year and that is where the project ends. It is a purely academic exercise and I am in need of inspiration!!!)

Gratefully

  • How about weeding a gravel drive without chemicals or bending down?

  • How about an app that tells you the name of a plant or weed from the leaf shape when you photograph it?

One thing I would really love for my garden is a frame with netting across to place over my wildlife pond to keep falling tree leaves out of the pond in the autumn - it sounds simple, but it needs to be easily folded up quite small and stored away in the garage for the rest of the year, and then easily opened up and placed over the pond in the autumn.

The base of the framework needs to be raised off the lawn so that frogs etc can get in and out of the pond and the netting needs to be kept taut so that birds don't get entangled.   I've been thinking about how to make something like this all year but am stumped - it probably needs an engineering undergraduate's brain rather than an artist's image

  • Thanks for the ideas everyone, I am starting to put together a picture of requirements.

Any more ideas are welcome, its best to have lots of ideas to chose from at the start of the creative process!!!
