Clematis

Can anyone recommend a clematis that is, or would be in full sun a burgundy or maroon colour?

I would like one around 2-2.5 metres and have been looking at Gravetye Beauty, Warszawska Nike and Dark Eyes but the colour on the images seems to vary so much from website to website; I suppose due to the sun and and age of the flowers.

I would like purple with red tones (as opposed to blue) but not bordering on ceriseimage

I would also like a very dark almost black clematis for a Westerly position to combine with a yellow. I've been looking at Purple Spider and Romantika on Taylor's website, but again the colour seems to vary.

Has anyone any recommendations/ideas/advice? It would be much appreciatedimage

Thanks,

Vic

Have a look at Niobe.I'm delighted with mine and would say it's a dark claret red.

The darkest purple / black clematises I know are: Polish Spirit, Viticella Flore Pleno and Black Prince.

I have Etoile Violette in a westerly position, gets smothered with dark purple flowers, but may not be dark enough for you. I love it.

Have you looked at this site? I use it when I need advice. http://www.taylorsclematis.co.uk/

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Thanks for your help Guysimage

I'm going to think about this for a while. I think Nadia might be right about Niobe - I remember seeing it and wishing I bought that instead of Rebecca.

I've been looking at Taylor's and one called Thorncroft. Seen a beautiful one called Cassis, entirely unsuitable for what I'm after and I don't think it's hardy...

Night Veil is a superb member of the viticella family and is one of the plants in my National Collection of Viticellas.  Gravetye Beauty is not very floriferous, Purple Spider is an early flowering atragene, Romantika tends to get powdery mildew, nice plant, though.

Also, Etoile Violette has yellow stamens and is ideal for growing in tandem with other yellow plants.

  • Thanks for that info Richard - great to have some feedback on the individual plantsimage I'm glad you said that about the Purple Spider - I hadn't even noticed it wouldn't flower at the same time as the yellow I want to buy which I think was June to Sept.

I do like the Etoile Violette but it is not quite the colour I was after...

I'm going to ponder over this oneimage

check out Rebecca, one of Raymond Evison's varieties. It's divine.

  • Just a tip, Victoria and everyone else:  You should not trust the colours you see on any website, ever.  From a technical viewpoint, I can assure you that there are simply too many variables and that you will NEVER see true colours on the web.  If you have more than one PC/laptop/i-thing, place them next to each other and you will also see that even those don't show the same colour on the same website!

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Hi Hostafanimage

I have Rebecca on a North facing fence and it did well last year and flowered twice. I admit I hoped it would be post box red which it isn't quite and the flowers fade to cerise...

I might check out some lilac/lavender ones instead which is the other colour in the border in front. Or maybe a burgundy climbing rose - that only just occurred to me- if there is such a thingimage

  • Took that long typing my last post (and looking up Clematis) that I missed your post Bob.

I know, you're absolutely right, that's why I wanted to ask the forum for their experience. I've been tricked into buying a few plants nowimage
