Snow Damage to Californian Lilac

  • I'd replace it - they do hate root disturbance so what has happened sounds like bad news to me.  Rather than waste a year trying to save it I'd grasp the nettle and hoik it out now and get another one - perhaps a deciduous one this time to try to guard against snow damage? image

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • I have a deciduous one, with lovely pale green leaves ( don'y know name, sorry) which can be pruned as hard as you like.

  • Not very showy, but the paleness of the foliage ( lime green) allows the flowers to stand out. Also grows very fast so pruning is essential.

Emma, I have just seen advice that renovation pruning on an evergreen is a no-no and it should be removed/replaced.

Thank you everyone.  I think I will probably call it a day - give it the final rites and get a new one!
