Yes I think a multi-pronged attack on the little b.....s gives us the best chance.

I tried the wool pellets last year.  They worked for about a month and then stopped - and I thought they were too expensive to have to keep replacing.  Only thing that works for me long term is the copper bands.

  • Thank you all, some things I've not heard of there, a trip to the garden centre for me today with a long list!!!

  • When do you intend to sow your seeds, and how will you look after them? Do you have a greenhouse?

  • Hi, I do have a greenhouse which is unheated and also a fairly warm conservatory so plenty of options. I've already got a few trays of seeds going in the conservatory. I'm preferring indoor sowing to direct sowing so I've got more control about where things end up!

beckie, got some stargazer lilies from morrissons, a bargain! Unsure where to put them, will they be ok in borders or should they go in pots??

  • Most years we have a debate on here as to when to start seeds. I find if I start early, they get ahead of themselves, often too leggy and then they are poorly specimens. If you start later they catch up and are sturdier. Also windowsills can be a difficult location.

  • I have to admit to being a little over eager with my seed sowing! Fortunately I've got plenty of seeds left in case my current crop don't make it!

ive already learnt my lesson with coriander, leggy doesn't quite describe it!!!

  • Woody is right, but ive been in your position Kels, desperate to get going!

keep your fingers crossed for a mild year when you can get them outside quickly, theres nothing to stop you sowing direct too a little later, best case senario is you get flowers for a longer period image

I have to say, i sow later nowadays and bring things on "hard" when i can image

Lillies will be happy in either site in my experience, but not knowing anything about your garden, its hard to say, they dont like to be soggy and enjoy lots of sun, i sometimes will grow them in a pot, placed in a border for extra height or to cover something up thats gone over image

But the main thing is......what else did you buy????? image
  • Lots of seeds including Larkspur, delphinium, hollyhocks & cosmos. Bare root redcurrant & raspberry canes, a bay tree, primroses for a pop of colour and all manner of pots, labels & compost!!!! And this is why I am always skint!!!! Although feel slightly less guilty as my local garden centre is sadly closing down and has 25% off everything, it would have been rude not to!!

ive got a good area in mind for the lilies, I'm lucky enough to have a sheltered south facing garden, im trying to establish a cottage garden type border & have just got 3 lovely raised beds for veg growing. Also patio areas with lots of pots. Plenty to do!

re seed sowing, I'm gonna have to sit on my hands for a few weeks image

  • It sounds like you will have plenty to do planting all of your goodies! did you take a van to the GC?image

Do you want to grow any roses? Last year around sept/oct aldi had some bare root ones for about 2 quid, worth keeping your eye out for image

Your plot will be lovely, i hope you will post some pics image
