I think it must be the shade that makes the difference. I bought a pot of flowering lily of the valley and planted them out in deep shade in heavy clay soil. Now I have to weed them out, they spread all over the border, through the roots of shrubs and other plants.
Right, as soon as I can I'll put the ones in the pot into the very dark patch behind the greenhouse. That's about the only bit of the garden that I haven't tried. Wish me luck!
I threw some down between the arbour and the back fence last year, havent looked to see what happened yet (forgot if im honest) will defenately prove its a shade thing if they come up

I've never had any luck with mine. Normally get the odd solitary leaf and no flowers. Well drained area though, heavy soil, part shaded. Hmm....
