Mammoth Onion Seedling Die back

After transplanting my four week old Mammoth Onion Seedlings into John Innes No 1 compost (as advised) the tips of the seedlings are dying back, can anyone advise me please to stop loosing the dozen that I sowed?

Just done a ph test, the results are 7.5 Alkaline still at a loss.

Far to early, sow some more beginning of March, they will be fine.

I haven't grown onions from seed before, usually just plant sets.

If the seeds were bought from Robinson's try contacting them and asking their advise, I've found them very helpful.

  • Mammoth onions have to be sown early to get a whopper image, on saying that, havent done mine yet!

How bad do the seedlings look? Sometimes it can just be the shock of transplanting, i would still sow a few more, next time maybe add some horti sand to your potting mix, i personally find i get better results with a looser mix, they shouldnt need an incredibly rich soil just yet image
  • Thanks guys for your advice.

The tips are white and the pips aren't on the majority and the tips are floppy.

Thanks Bekkie I'm growing to try and show them so hence my concern.

Thanks also Zoomer I am going to ring Robinsons tomorrow, the lady there was very helpful when I enquired about sowing them before, I tend to panic when the seedlings look sickly.  Thats the impatient gardener in me I suppose.
