Cheap Dahlias

Just sharing my finds this year.

Costco - £7.99 plus VAT for ten medium size tubers.
Wilko - £2.50 for a pack of three
B&Q ok if you go for multi-buy discounts.

Online http://www.gardens4you.co.uk/  and  http://www.angliabulbs.com/  with tubers just over a quid.

The Costco tubers are clearly the best but really falling in love with Wilko lately.  I will still be buying a few top quality standard Dahlias from more specialist suppliers but the bargain buys will fill some spaces and if grown properly should be ok.

I ordered Alliums from Anglia Bulbs last year. they were great. I even recieved a personal letter along with a new catalogue today from them =)

  • Yes i hear nothing but good reviews about them.  I am not a big customer as I cannot resist the temptation to pick up stuff from Costco and Wilko.  Something hairy hunterish about actually getting home carrying some bags of tuber treasures.

I grew these 50 for £2.50. Very easy to grow and beautiful flowers, they make good size tubers for the following year.

Did you send me some seeds of those, Fidget? . I have lost all my pm's and cant remember who sent what! They are very rewarding from seeds and make lovely plants in their first year? Well worth having a go.

don't tell me about growing dahlias from seed. I have about 300 plants and I'm still looking for new ones.  OH will kill me if I get more.

I've never thought of trying dahlias from seed before, mistakenly believing that they took a couple of years to flower, but I'll certainly have a go this year.  The ones you grow are so colourful Lynimage.  I'll still have a look in Wilco though just in case.

  • Dwarf ones will certainly be fine in their first year, really large ones  may not hit their full stride until their second year. They are all greedy feeders and will need plenty of food to do their best. You will get good sized tubers by the end of the year.

I also grew dahlias from seed last year 100%  plants , very happy with them , some beautiful and different .

  • Yes I am going to try growing from seed.  I ended up with a couple of thousand from various places.  might be joining Hostafan in the sin bin if they all grow though.
