I've got a Cox's Orange Pippin, purchased 3 years ago as a large specimen....and ive had 2 apples from it! Last year we planted a James Grieve near by, and that hasn't done too well either. I went back to the garden centre, and the advice was to be patient. There is a huge ancient old Apple tree in the field next to our garden so we didn't think that pollination would be an issue. Would love to know if there is anything we can do to encourage more fruit.....as patience for 4 years is stretching it for me!
We have a sunset, Lord Lambourne, blenheim orange (all mentioned above) and a Newton Wonder. Have had at least one apple from each in 4 years, but they are definitely still getting into their stride. We chose the varieties after a visit to the West Dean Apple Day - where I tasted more apples in one afternoon than I would normally eat in a month. Amazing how different the flavours are when you taste them side by side.
Ribston Pippin. Wonderful flavour. It's a parent of Cox - but much healthier. It's also one of Monty Don's favourites, I read - along with Jupiter and James Grieve.
Tootles, could it be your puning? Thinking about it, most of my trees took a couple of years to get going, but i grow the eaters as cordons, i dont know if that has anything to do with the productivity
Charlie November, thanks for that! , BM will be very pleased when shes back online!
An apple day! I wonder if there are any by me
Chicky, ive heard of Newtons wonder, whats the flavour like?
It has to be Ergemont Russet - picked from the tree they are infinitely better than those in the shops. A sweetness and perfume that's unmatched. I enjoy the thick skin too - I'm sure it's very healthy
I used to have a Greensleeves apple - cross between a golden delish and something else, that was also excellent and nothing like the tasteless GD in the shops
