Tomatoes and cucumbers
in Fruit & veg
I have been told that I should not grow tomatoes and cucumbers in the same greenhouse. Can anyone tell me why please. I have an unheated greenhouse and normally grow tomatoes but thought I'd also try cucumbers too this year.
Thanks.

Never been a problem on my greenhouse- normal sized one, cucumbers on one side and toms on the other
Me too Fruitcake. Mine grow in the greenhouse happily side by side.
I grew cucumbers in my unheated GH for the first time last year and they were fine
Most folk don't have a greenhouse placed in perfect full-sun conditions so if yours has a more shaded side, best grow your cucumbers there and your tomatoes in the sunniest area. As Edd says, they each like different conditions and are prone to different bugs/diseases. If you are unlucky enough to get spider mite on the cucs, the standard method of control is spraying them with water. Unfortunately that leads to high humidity and the tomatoes might then suffer from fungal problems. So, it's really a case of crossing your fingers and hoping you don't get any of the common problems!
I'm fortunate that I've usually been able to grow in two different GH's last year they had to share and the cumbers suffered at the expense of toms. My cumbers grow well with little direct sunlight I shade them and keep the GH humid, toms get more sun but I don't let them scorch and keep GH dry.
Just go for it. I did in my polytunnel which doesn't get full sun all day. I grow toms on one side and cucumbers on the other (rotating each year) and have had reasonable crops of both.
Up till now I've always grown both in the same greenhouse with no problems but I'm about to install a second greenhouse so will separate them this year for the first time. Which leads to my next question: Which of the two greenhouses should I put my other crops in - I plan to grow melons, aubergines, peppers and chillis.
Never had a problem growing both of these in the same green house for the last three years.
One tip I saw for growing cucumbers and tomatoes in the same greenhouse was to grow the cucumber plants in vertical tubes of polythene, like the kind sold for tunnels/cloches. This helps to conserve the moisture around the cucumber plants, which they like, and leaves the rest of the greenhouse dryer for the tomatoes. Haven't tried it myself.
