  • Please remember when removing it not to put the smallest itty bit on your compost heap as it grows from the tiniest piece. Digging it out, you have to reach Australia to find the end of the root, glyphosate weedkiller regularly, hoeing all help. If you soil is water retentive, digging in horticultural grit will also help as it loved damp conditions. It is a prehisoric plant and in days gone by used to grow to tree sized proportions! Try to behead it before it develops flower spikes around July time as it spreads by spores as well as spreading sideway under the soil.

It sounds as if you are on a hiding to nothing if other allotment holders have it as some people will definitely not try to get rid of it.

  • I have this pain in the neck weed on my plot in abundance. However there is a weedkiller which is designed to tackle this weed, which overcomes the problem of getting the weedkiller to adhere to the plant due to its high silca coating which prevents most weedkillers from penetrating. It is expensive and I am going to give it a try.

  • What's it called?
