overgrown wisteria

my wisteria is 25 years old and the bottom half is
so overgrown and congested. There is lots of growth I cannot get to ....and I wouldn't know where to start! I give it a twice yearly prune and cut back whippy growths. How do I get it back to a few good leaders when it is so congested?

Wisteria can take a drastic prune, but you won't see flowers for a few years.
I'd start by looking for the main stem and removing at ground level any suckers, which, from the pic, you appear to have in plenty. Once you get those out it will look half the plant.
Ah ok so there should only be 2-3 main stems from the base and I will , twice a year, do my pruning, but continually cut off any more suckers that shoot. Thanks Dave - I will let you know how I get on its a scary mammoth task. Got to get hubby to sharpen my loppers!
