Are they any good now

The new owners of the garden next door have offered me a blackcurrant bush & raspberry canes but because they are turning it all to grass they have cut everything down to ground level are they any good now.

Autumn raspberry are cut down every year anyway. If they are summer they are still good but no fruit this year.

Blackcurrant will take a few years to grow back but again may be ok.

They may be old plants which would be better replaced. Blackcurrant is susceptible to virus, as are raspberries. There are good modern varieties and not very expensive.

As you can see I am not a gardener but my old neighbour (Jim) was, he died  about 6 years ago a massive heart attack whilst in his garden, His son looked after it until his mum also died last year hence the new owners. As Jims garden is being destroyed I just wanted to keep a bit of it going as I only have two half barrels on a flat roof I was most likely asking to much anyway but thank you for your input.   Kind Regards

  • Awww Barry, what a lovely way to remember your neighbour! This lot are talking complete sence and have given you good advice, but in these circumatances, i would be inclined to give them a go, they may be fine having come from a keen gardener, if they do show signs of being infected with a virus, you can disgard them then. Its sad to see a garden broken up

Sorry guys, i know im soppy, but its got to be worth a go? image
