Moving a sorbus tree

Jesse2501Jesse2501 Posts: 152

hi guys, I've planted a sorbus tree too close to an apple tree. I want to move it but I'm not sure when. I know that late autumn, early winter is best but is now a good time? I'm not sure as the soil is cold surely?

Should i I wait till it gets milder or will the tree be trying to grow by then?

It's only in the ground one year now.  Thanks for the advice everyone.

How long has the Sorbus (Rowan?Ash?) been in the ground? Roots will be a major issue the longer it has been there. If you really want to keep the Sorbus (they can be weeds) then I would transplant the Sorbus now before leaf growth and sap rising. If you transplant it from one hole to another and apply feed I doubt it will harm it, assuming you are not destroying lots of mature roots.

I wouldn't shift it if the ground is frozen or totally waterlogged, otherwise I'd do it asap

Exactly the puzzle I was in guys. Move now, risk frost damage, move in March, disturb it when it's kicking back to life.

I planted it autumn 2013 so it's just over a year. Easy enough move as it's still quite small but I reckon I'll wait a month , kinda half way between both ideas I reckon.
