  • Is the soil boggy stinkfoot? It can be difficult to get grass to grow well on boggy soil, and you would have to keep the kids off it for a while (cant remember how long, def a few months), i know this is a weird thing to say on a gardening forum, would you consider artificial grass? Its pricey, but you wont have to worry about growing conditions or maintainence and the kids can play on it almost straight away i should think image

In an ideal world, you would wait and see what comes up, but we dont live in an ideal world! I hadnt realised you have kids, i would at least get them a bit of the garden ready where they can enjoy, there will be plenty of time for making a wonderful space in the coming years image

Gravel paths are quick and easy to lay, if you het a good quality membrane undernesth, they are also a doddle to take up as and when you change the design, its great to start with a path as it sort of gives your brain a starting point to work out what to do with everything else image

I'd save any large stones for a later project and small ones for possibly drainage channels.

I'd agree with bekkie's comment about grass as you have a north facing garden. Grass needs sun and open conditions to do well and the part nearest the house will struggle to grow  - especially if you have children running around on it. I know lots of people don't like fake grass, but if you can afford to do a patch near the house for the kids, it will be better than constantly struggling with the real thing and some of it is very impressive. Easy enough to remove when they outgrow it too. You can plant sturdy shrubs and planting around it to soften the look and withstand any abuse! That leaves you  the rest of the garden to play with in a more conventional way image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks. I would love artificial grass to be honest.....I hate mowing. But I don't think I could afford it. Guess I will have to chance it with grass seed. My neighbour seems to have done well.....
  • by boggy what do you mean?
  • Haha. Runny beak imageimageimage I like it.

Well....theres not been much progress on the garden. Me and the kids weeded a patch last week...then it got all frosty and they were ill....but I've bought a few bits and pieces, and I'm looking into turf tomorrow.
  • Good on you getting out there, its an orrible time of year, lots of colds about too.

Dunno if this is any good to you, homebargains have pretend grass for 29 quid, i didnt look at the size, sorry, wasnt thinking! It look pretty hood tho, might be worth checking out, im back down there on tuesday if you want me to check the size etc image
  • That's kind of you ???? my grandparents have generously bought me 30 square feet of fresh turf today!!! How kind ???????????? so I've got a bit sorted out for the kids to play on whilst I seed the rest
