My first greenhouse

Hi guys - at last I'm getting a greenhouse but could anyone give me the name of a good make bearing in mind we are financially challenged. I'm looking at bare aluminium frame and standard horticultural glass even though I'd prefer the polywotsit but it seems to add an awful lot in price. Went to a GC with my Dad but online looks to have better deals.

look on Ebay, if you're prepared to dismantle one, you might bet something better than buying brand new. I bought an 8 x 12 for £150 a few years ago

Will do Hostafan and thank you image I forgot to mention I'll be a certain age this year and Mrs F and my Dad are colluding to get one for my birthday so I think they have 'new' in mind. Oh and 8'x6' is about the size. I already have a slabbed base once the dog kennel that's there has been moved.

Fishy, here's a thought, if you can find a cheap second hand one , maybe Mrs F and Dad could get you other stuff, like heated propagators, tools , plant gift vouchers ?

8 x 6 is the most popular sized greenhouse so they're always available. Some folk "inherit" them with a new house and want rid of them. Some just no longer use them.  New is always lovely, but you might get yourself a bargain.

Fishy happy GH image and happy birthday for whenever.,,do tell when!

I have a Rhino. also have an old aluminium, one that we carried across the road image that cost us the price of toughened glass. Rhino is a great GH but expensive for a first time one image I think get the best bargain you can and I'm sure in a few years you'll want a bigger one and that's the time to invest.

Make sure your garden chair fits through the door I spend ages sitting in mine during the winter doing garden planning and soaking up the winter sun image

Thanks guys there's some really useful advice there.

Pansyface - that's a big concern about ordinary glass. We have two dogs and when they get charging about they don't always look where they're going. I've looked on the GreenhousePeople and they have some great deals on clearance, some with toughened glass.

KEF - probably the most important aspect!! Room for a chair image

Hi fishy , I have an elite greenhouse I am very happy with it but the construction was a bit of a nightmare with the instructions so poor. If you live in a windy area the frame needs to be extra strong and consider bar capping. My GH is located very close to the house so I got it powder coated green, I were a bit unsure if it was worth the money but now I wouldn't buy a GH not powder coated, I see the GH very much part of the garden. High eaves are ideal as well. the price can escalated quite quick when you start adding accessory so be careful

You can try Gumtree, I saw the exact same GH I just bought on gumtree with all the bells and whistles for £220 i payed over £1000 a couple of months before  for mine image, they was selling cause it came with the house and was no use to them.

I think greenhouse people and quite a few others are doing sales on GH at the moment.

  • Mine was free from other half'd workmate who wanted rid. 30 quid on glass and a good clean and it's like new!
