Can vouch for north Norfolk too - my favourite aunt lived there and we spent a week there every year with the chicklets. Loads to do and see - seals at Blakeney (a la winterwatch), shire horses, farm parks, dinosaur centres, the beach at hunstanton, walks in the woods..........happy days.
You could try Wales. Have a look at www.walesholidays.co.uk. We have stayed in a stone cottage on a farm in Rhoslefain. Quite close to Tywyn, Barmouth and Fairbourne. There are 3-4 nice beaches and you can get them virtually to yourselves. And prices are reasonable.

We're in North Devon and we have a holiday let, Not quite as far as Cornwall, but only 10 miles to the beach at Bude ( which I know IS in Cornwall)
we moved here 3 years ago from Hants / Surrey and just love it here.
Anywhere on the UK south coast in August, it's going to be a scorcher
Rosemummy: I've sent you a pm with my suggestions.
