Rose rust - time to start again?

I planted a healthy climbing Paul's Lemon Pillar rose last year in January, which produced blooms without any problems. However, later in the year we noticed rust on the underside of the leaves. We garden organically and really failed to control the infection. I've attached pictures of the plant, has anyone had any luck in nursing a similar rose back to health, or should I confine it to the bin and buy a more modern disease resistance variety?

I wouldn't get rid of the rose if you like it - if rust is in that area of the garden any rose will be susceptible.

I would pick up and burn any fallen leaves and then give the area a good mulching to bury any spores that are on the soil surface.

This year pick off and burn any leaves with rust as soon as they appear and that should limit the spread.

  • Thanks Edd & Dove - I was trying Neem oil, but I didn't find it made much difference. That might be down to the concentration though, it said pure neem oil on the front, but on the back of the bottle it was mostly almond oil.
