seed potatoes

Hostafan1Hostafan1 Posts: 34,887

I've just bought some Charlotte and Pink Fir Apple seed potatoes ( which I grow every year). Last year I grew Foremost as a first early. Overall my crop wasn't great , but maybe other factors.

I was planning to plant first earlies in the new polytunnel in old compost bags and i was wondering if anyone had a particular favourite variety

I had a great crop with Lady Christl 2 years ago, but none in shop to-day.

I only grow 1st & 2nd earlies not main crop. I've bought Rocket, new to me but recommended by forum member and Charlotte that I really enjoyed last year. Also want some Vales Emerald that I also enjoyed last year. Previous years I'd only grown Pentland Javelin, they did well but I prefer a waxy spud. I grow in sacks.

Not got my spud yet going to a potato day end of January - ones I liked before was best one -lady Balfour, Kestrel, Nadine - like quite a few of the ones I have grown

Edd have a look if any of these places are near you - proper websites off that should have the right dates as they have not all been updated http://www.potatoday.org/potatodays.htm

    Bet I will see them

Red Duke of York are my favourite, Wilja, pentland Javlin and Aaron Pilot are also good ones.

Not keen on Charlotte, they never seem to cook well and fall apart in the pan.

I'm not sure either. I grew them for a few years in bags, never had that problem with other spuds, most people rate themimagebut there are so many varieties to choose from I decided to throw in the towel and try something elseimage.

  • I've grown Charlotte several times without any problems particularly under the black polythene sheet which is in place as we speak, this year I had a word with Pierre in my local Brico and he reccommended Annais as "Tres precoce" hopefully that means first early, they are currently under the bench [heated seed bed] chitting. The first lot will go in in a months time in the greenhouse.

  • charlotte are the only ones im going to do this year. first year of growing spuds is always the best and the easiest!!
