apple trees

I have a couple of old apple trees that are very tall, going straight up with no outward branches. I believe the garden used to be an orchard once upon a time and the 3 trees I have are all that's left so am keen to save them. Any ideas to encourage outward growth?

Any chance of a picture of them Judith ? That might help with pruning advice.

I would cut the upward branches to an outward facing bud and hope that they would grow outwards to make more of a cup shape. My trees were old and unpruned but we took 2 years to cut the old branches to a better shape and remove some of them as we were worried about the shock to the trees. They look a lot better now.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
