Trailing indoor plant for a cold spot?

Please could you advise? I'm seeking an indoor trailing plant (other than ivy) which will be happy in a UK north facing (cold!) window in a 6" hanging container? Anything considered, thanks in advance for any suggestions x

  • Asparagus Sprengeri - I have one in my North facing porch, which only gets what heat escapes through the front door. It isn't a fern but has long ferny stems, very pretty and undemanding.

Either Tradescantia or Chlorophytum should cope too, provided they don't actually get frozen. Tradescantia has long, trailing stems with oval,  pointed leaves all along them.  It comes in plain green, green & white or green /grey/purple varieties. Once you've got it. you need never be without it - just break off an end, stick it in some damp compost in a pot, or in a glass of water and you'll have another plant in no time. Chlorophytum is the spider plant with long grassy leaves with green and white stripes. These hang over the edge of the pot and then it puts out long runners with little baby plants on the ends which hang down even further. You can leave these, or if you want another plant, just take one off (you will find it already has tiny roots) and pot it up. These last two are readily available on ebay!

  • When Chlorophytum is at home (in Africa) it is called Hen and Chickens, such a charming name to remember, don't you think?image   And so much easier!
