difficult lawn

I have a slightly shady patch with a mature oak tree nearby which refuses to grow grass. This has been reseeded several times and last spring I dug the whole area over adding compost as I went. I returfed this with nice healthy looking turf and for a few months all was well. However this has practically all died off and turned back into a mud patch! What can I do about this?

Give up trying to grow a lawn and change it into a bed for shade lovers?

The combination of shade and the tree will make it almost impossible to grow grass very successfully fiona. The roots will take all the moisture from the area and it's hard for  grass to deal with that for any length of time. Perhaps it would be time to try something else. Make the surrounding area a border/bed and grow some ground cover which will cope with shade and poor soil conditions. If you go down that route, Vinca (periwinkle) springs to mind but there's lots of other options too. Some hardy geraniums will cope there although they're not evergreen.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
