Ants in compost bin

  • Not sure what the cola or wine is for? Would flat tonic water do whatever is supposed to happen? And re the flying ants, isn't a dalek lid a bit of an impediment to their swarming?

Actually, the presence of ants means that your bin is a tad dry. You can go Brummie's way as above, or add a little urine and some green matter.image

So glad I discovered your forum as have been contemplating over the ants in my compost bin - I have just moved into a house with a big nest at the bottom. I will now leave them alone to 'do their stuff' - so thanks for all your replies.

  • I had my daleks infested with ants for the first time recently and was a bit concerned.

After seeing this I'll stay inside and let them aerate the piles for me.

Oh and drink a beer or two so I can recycle it later.

  • Yes ants may have done a great job on my compost but now I need to use it and it's swarming with ants! They're biting me as I try to dig it out. Also the new flower bed I've been saving my compost up for is right by the House and we've already got ants coming into the house every day. The last thing I want to do is introduce more. They're in my darlek, my normal compost heap, my lawn, my house - its an invasion! What can I do?
  • So ants don't kill the worms?  I used to have load like a red moving mass.  All I have now is ants. Not looked down at the bottom yet. That's for another day. Jx

I would soak the compost thoroughly. Ants don't like water.

Ants away from the house, I leave in peace. Ants too near the house get fed that stuff that comes in a cylinder and looks like sugar. It works almost immediately.

    In London. Keen but lazy.

I agree with B3 - if you have ants in your compost bin the contents are too dry. image
