Narcissus Cheerfullness
in Plants
I was given a very large, heavy glass vase containing pebbles, plus 4 Cheerfulness bulbs and growing instructions for growing them over water as a Christmas present.
I really do not like doing this but decided to give it a go as I see the donor regularly.
I started them off on Boxing Day, putting the vase, vawse or vaise, on the bathroom windowsill facing North.
It has been nothing short of miraculous. The plants are now around 14 ins tall and there are flower buds just breaking apart ready to open. I top the water up every 2/3 days to just below the base of the bulbs and am looking forward to the scent from them. I shall put the bulbs in the garden in a quiet corner to recover as they will not flower again for 3/4 years probably.

Have loved this one since I was a child. Grew a big tub of them last year and got more this. Scented daffodils are gorgeous, late pheasant eye and little jonquils. Even the ordinary ones have a slight scent. You don't notice it usually, but walk through a mass of them on a warm spring day and there is a waft of perfume.
Why wont they flower for 3 to 4 years, I grow mine in pots every year or is it just that particular one?
Lyn, those bulbs will probably need a year of growing in fertile soil to produce flowers again, after having only had water to nourish them for this year. Please, Joyce Goldenlily, put a photo up when they are looking good. And make sure your friend sees them!
I was given a dozen of these when I moved here in 1971 and although lots of them have been munched or dug up accidently I still have about 4 that bloom vigorously every year with the most amazing fragrance. Not bad going is it? They remind me of the lovely lady who gave them to me, sadly no longer with us.
My bulbs are the white Chreefulness and the first flowers have just opened. To me they are a pale shadow of what they would be if grown naturally in soil. The leaves are a good green colour but rather leggy although upright, and the flower petals are thin in texture. But they still smell gorgeouslicious.
As above, because they have been grown in water it will take at least a couple of years for them to recover and build up the bulb before it is strong enough to produce flowers again.Have promised myself some yellow ones for a container next year.
Hi everyone.
Apologies. Now that the flowers have opened properly my bulbs are not Cheerfullness, they are Paperwhite, hence the "papery" texture of the petals, and the scent is not nearly as pleasant, so I am a little bit disappointed, but mustn't complain.
I am still going to buy some Cheerfullness for next Spring, probably both the yellow and white.
You lucky chap Verdun, what a lovely donation to your garden.
