lime tree chippings

we had a 30mtr lime tree felled last year and the resulting stump ground down to below ground level. The resulting mixture of wood chips and soil now fills two large builders bags, about 2 tonnes!

I wish to use it as mulch in the borders, of which we have a lot, but the boss does not think that it will be suitable.

Any opinions one way or the other, as I am not looking forward to having to dispose of it all at the local recycling facility!

look forward to your informed comment/advice.

I use any chipped trees and shrubs as mulch.

Compost it for 12 months, it rots down into lovely compost.

  • Thanks guys, much appreciated. Think I will try to convince the boss to use it, as leaving it there to compost for a year, albeit an excellent idea, is regrettably not an option.

a local tree surgeon brings me chippings he can't sell. I find , if the trees were in leaf, it breaks down very quickly. You say " last year", depends if it was January or December, dig into the pile and see what you think, if it's still steaming, don't mulch with it, if it's dark and cold, it should be fine.

  • the tree came down in September last, and was well in leaf, although obviously starting to shed. I will have a dig into the bags at the weekend and see if it is still steaming.

    many thanks

from experience, I'd say it should be ok to use as a mulch by now.

  • Looks like it is cold all through so going to give it a go, subject to permission from her indoors of course.

many thanks to all for you advice, much appreciated.
