Catkin identity please

Hi everyone, I have noticed catkins on an old shrub in our new garden which I don't recognise. Taking a few pictures, I wondered if anyone could identify it please, it is around 2.5 Meters tall with a slender trunk and doesn't seem to be a willow.

Thanks in advance

Hard to be sure against the light

You may have some sort of magnolia thereimage

  • I think nut is right - those look like magnolia flowerbuds rather than catkins.  And a lot of them, too - you could be in for quite a treat come spring! image

Not catkins, perhaps you meant pussy willow. But not that either, agree with nut and Bob.

It would be lovely if you showed us a picture when they open  image

  • Magnolia, yes of course, didn't think of it. Maybe due to it's growing shape that is tall and cylindrical has me confused. I will post pictures when flowers open. Thank you all.

  • Some of the newer cultivars do grow  that way. I have one called 'Satisfaction' that does and I believe another is called 'Susan'.  Useful because they flower much quicker than some older varieties and don't take up too much space.
