I'd do it after flowering, even as late as the Autumn, but wait till they have flowered first.
I'd leave it till autumn, immediately the leaves fall,so the plant has a couple of months to get its roots re-established before it is under stress again from flowering and then the energy consuming production of new spring foliage.
AWB....What colours are the witch hazels? I'm looking to palnt one in the front garden but cannot decide which one!! Your opinions valued.
The witch hazels with red flowers have some pretty spectacular autumn colours too - this one is from Diane:
The yellow flowered ones are less spectacular in autumn for me.
Thank you all for your input.
i shall move it after flowering,it is in the wrong place, and not particularly noteworthy at other times.
understorey for some silver birches I think.
Thanks Verdun, do have an area with dogwoods and viburnum opulus , much better choice.
Thanks Verdun.I've been debating on this for a very long time. It looks good when in flower but nothing much for the rest of the year.
