Just got rid of a rat in my garden with a big humane trap baited with a fatball brand is "The Big Cheese". He wasn't harmed at all and I drove him a a good way away from the house before releasing him. I bought a cheaper trap first but it was way too small. This type makes sure the rat is all the way in (inc tail) then drops the door when he puts his paws on the platform that holds the bait
We looked out of our window one day and there were three young rats playing tag in our apple tree although amusing to watch it was also revolting, the council sent "the rat man" he put poison down to get rid of them but he said that others will always replace them " You are never more than nine yards from rats" .
When you say your fat-balls were lasting a week or more can I ask how big or how many you put out? I put three out each morning and they are gone by lunchtime and as we sit here watching them we know it is only the birds eating them.
We saw two in our garden last Thursday. One even climbed our apple tree to get at feeders, but was stopped in its tracks by two magpies who hunted it down the tree. They haven't been back since but we have put down a trap that has food in, they eat it and that's the end of them.
PS. to above, I would think the Health Inspector will chase up the recycling plant next door to you if seaguls are scavenging then rats will certainly find food.
Well the update on my Rat problem, I rang the council and arranged for pest control to come every two weeks, this went on for nearly two months (poison and rat holes ), but last week I had a big shock when I found a large and I mean LARGE RAT! Dead next to my greenhouse, the problem is now solved and no more holes in my garden
