Allotment - glysophate?

Hi everyone,

I took on an allotment in the summer of 2014, with lots of couch grass and bind weed. Tried lots of things from sieving all the soil (gave up on this idea pretty quickly!), to covering the soil etc. I'm only able to attend once a week, twice at most due to work and university.

I refused to use weedkillers in the beginning, but I've finally given up and have decided to use them just to initially clear the plot.

I'm looking into using glysophate. Would it be wise to apply this time of year? I really would like to start planting in spring.

How long after spraying can I plant into it?

Any advice would be great!

    Hi Jordan

You'll get plenty of help here.
Not the right time of year for glyphosphate. It works by absorption via the leaves, and this time of year most plants are not growing, so will not 'take-up' the glyphosphate.
You need to wait until the weeds are growing in spring then use it on a dry day with no rain for about 6-8 hrs after application.
Bindweed is a bu**er tho. The tiniest fragment of root will sprout to form a new plant. Glyphosphte can work with bindweed if you reapply regularly. Some people use plastic bolltles with glyphosphate and poke the bindweed into the bottle to allow it to drink-up the glyphosphate.

You can replant after using glyphosphate after it has dried, but give it 24hrs to be sure

    Good luck!

  • I inherited an unkept garden with ivy, couch grass and assortment of other weeds. I used glyphosphate to clear it over July and August I sprayed the entire plot twice. The garden is now barren. It does its job just use it once the warmer weather starts.

I've also stuck long bamboo canes near the bindweed so it can climb up , then use the gel stick to dab the leaves. Worked a treat in some Box balls
