Rambling roses

In the autumn I purchased and planted a few different varieties of Rambling roses to grow along my fences. I've just read that they flower on old wood. Does this mean I'm only going to get stem growth this coming summer and not get any flowers till the following summer?

I have one on an arch - unfortunately the arch collapsed in the first lot of storms. My BIL has fixed it so roses are just about supported but will have to get something much, much sturdier for the future - love the rose though
