The timing of pruning is crucial, young trees are pruned in spring so they heal quickly, older trees pruned in summer. Diseases such as silver leaf can attack pruning wounds, it needs to be done when the trees can recover fast. Cut out in growing growth, weak or stunted branches and shape the tree as required. I assume it is fan trained if in a pot so shape the fan and restrict the growth of the branches. If it is a tree then cut it back to a manageable size. We had three Victoria plums fan trained on walls, they were old when I was alad yet bore masses of wonderful tasting plums, still warm from the sun sweet and juicy we had to fight the wasps for them.

  • Thanks to both of you,it is in a pot but not fan trained i wanted it to look like a small tree,it is well branched with branches about 2' to 3' long how much do i cut back in spring.

Tony, depends on how high you want it or how much the pot will take before being off balance. Keep it lightly trimmed just to get the shape the fruit will grow on the low sprigs. I can still taste those sun warmed plums, the only time I ever got near that taste was in Somerset plums fresh off the tree.
