Standards and Clematis - can roots go rampant?

TinglyTingly Posts: 140

I wonder if anyone can help

firstly if you plant a standard- say a lilac or a rose- do the roots ever go mad? Oe because they have there heads grafted on and dont get any bigger (presumably?) do the roots behave themselves?

secondly- clematis roots- do they ver cause trouble?

i am becoming more and more infirm unfortunately - and although i dont want to keep the plants in pots- i equally dont want huge amounts of problems getting them out if i need to

many thanks

The roots of standard roses are nor that much bigger than normal roses so no problem there. Same with clematis  I've never had a problem with clematis roots.

    Ooh great thanks for that-

by the way -if i were to buy a standard and cut half its head off so it wouls sit flat against a fence- would that be do able or would it die do you think?

You'd be better of planting it about a foot from the fence. Cutting away half the head would be a waste and stimulate new growth, so it would grow back anyway.
