Daddy long legs larvae

I'm posting this on behalf of my best friend who hasn't long moved into a new house. She is having problems with masses of daddy long legs larvae and would like to know how best to eradicate them. Apologies if I have posted in the wrong place I'm pretty new to this

  • Yes they are eating her lawn lol. I will let her know about the cardboard thank you

  • Thanks Edd I have forwarded your suggestions to her

  • I believe there is a spray which kills daddy long legs in  lawns. Putting cardboard etc. on lawns may kill the grass as well if left down. Seagulls, starlings, crows etc will also damage a lawn digging for the leather jackets.

You only need to put the cardboard or plastic on the lawn overnight - it should be taken up next day so will not damage the growth of the grass.

I would use nematodes in September/October as described here https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=651

If the problem is bad, in the meantime I would try with plastic sheeting as described here http://www.turfshop.co.uk/index.php?page=13

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • I don't know about seagulls or crows but starlings are great. Being surrounded by farmland, we get great flocks of them in the winter and they go over the grass en masse. Afterwards it is covered in lots of little beak holes - free aeration too. The grass doesn't seem to suffer at all, but it is just grass, not bowling green standard. They are fun to watch but very wary, the slightest move and the whole cloud flies off.
